Guest: JL, London
I have holidayed in New York many times, staying in a wide variety of accommodations: swish uptown, staid mid-town, hip down-town Manhattan hotels, rented apartments in Brooklyn and houses in Jersey City. In October 2013, I, together with my husband, elderly mother and niece, stayed in the Orange Loft in Long Island City, which in my opinion, is easily ‘The Best’.
Location: 1 stop (5 minutes) to Grand Central Station, 3 stops (8 minutes) to Times Square on the 7 Train from the Vernon Boulevard/Jackson Avenue Subway station a minutes walk from the Apartment. Easy transport links to all other areas of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Reliable local taxi services. Relaxing riverside walks with film-set Manhattan skyline as awe-inspiring backdrop.
Neighborhood: residential, diverse, vibrant, great range of restaurants, cafes, galleries, supermarkets, pharmacies - detailed local information folders in the Loft enable you to find your way with ease to whatever you need. Yet in spite of its proximity to central Manhattan, the area has a small, safe and friendly feel: the restaurateurs and shopkeepers knew and remembered us within a few days. The amount of building work in progress - luxury flats and warehouse conversions - and the number of professional couples with young children at weekend brunch shows we’re not the only ones to appreciate the neighborhood’s appeal!
Apartment: the Loft is clean, spacious and tasteful with all amenities you could possibly need but no extraneous clutter Even better than the attractive photos suggest. As others have remarked - from the first moment you enter the loft you feel as though you are living as a genuine New Yorker resident, not merely staying as a transitory guest in an anonymous hotel or someone else’s home.
Hosts: Booking is secure and very straightforward. Margaret and David strike exactly the right balance between availability and intrusion. They are both extremely friendly, knowledgeable about NY and enthusiastic advocates of LIC living. Although no-where in evidence they are almost magically readily available by e-mail or in person to deal immeadiately with any any questions or give any information you may need.
In order to give a balanced view I’ve tried very hard to think of some disadvantages of staying in the Artist Loft in LIC - but I simply can’t do so!
